CAAST-Net Plus, a network for the Coordination and Advancement of sub-Saharan Africa-European Union (EU) Science & Technology Cooperation is set to kick-start it’s work in 2013. CAAST-Net Plus is funded under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7), the main research funding instrument of the EU.

CAAST-Net Plus aims to encourage more and better bi-regional cooperation for enhanced outcomes around topics of mutual interest, and particularly in relation to the global societal challenges of climate change, food security, and health.

COHRED will lead on increasing health S&T co-operation between the two regions, alongside the Ministry of Science and Technology of Kenya (MoHEST) and the Foundation for International Health and Co-operation from Spain (FCSAI).
In taking the co-lead on the health workplan, COHRED will facilitate learning and understanding of bi-regional policy in the domain of science and technology, in addition to offering practical support for those engaging in bi-regional research partnerships. COHRED will also work on building stronger linkages between the private sector, researchers and Ministries for Science and Technology in Africa and Europe – thereby aiming to further enhance uptake and dissemination of the fruits of collaborative research.
CAAST-Net Plus Activities:
  • Informing the bi-regional policy dialogue for mutual learning and awareness;
  • Building support for coordinated and innovative approaches to bilateral funding of bi-regional cooperation around global challenges;
  • Brokering the public-private relationship to foster improved uptake and translation of bi-regional research partnership outputs into innovative technologies, goods, and services; and
  • Dedicated mechanisms to encourage bi-regional research partnerships.
